Physical Setting

The Hana SWCD is located at the eastern tip of the Island of Maui. The area is dominated by the 10,025-foot Mount Haleakala, a dormant volcano, whose eastern slopes are characterized by rough, rocky land with gradual soil changes down to the low-lying coastal area of Hana. Basal ground water occurs in the Hana District.

History and Organization

The Hana SWCD was established on August 22, 1953. It was the second district formed on the Island of Maui, the thirteenth district formed in the State of Hawai`i, and is one of 16 SWCDs. The district is managed by a board of directors, who are all residents familiar with the needs in the districts.
